Katy Perry Becomes A Sim; How Do Her Virtual Performance Outfits Measure Up?

When news that Katy Perry would soon be making her Sims debut broke, we're sure the EA ecommerce site was FLOODED with traffic from billions of KatyCats pawing for a preorder. The California Gurl teams up with the popular gaming franchise for a special edition The Sims 3: Showtime Katy Perry game which allows you to take your Sims through a "rags to riches" storyline, owning stages, venue hopping, and living the dream as singers, performers, DJs, and magicians! Gamers can also expect a host of KP-themed features from an exclusive poster to a signature pink hairstyle to gigantic fruit stage props and our favorite, Katy's iconic FASHIONS. Replicating that hallmark Candyland-meets-Bettie Page look is no easy task (just ask the people at Mattel), and we don't know a LICK about the calibur of blood, sweat, and tears that go into coding a user-friendly alternate reality. But all things considered, we think the people at EA, Inc. did a pretty bang up job.

Sure, there are some discrepancies with all the cross-era referencing (the clothes of late-aughts Katy under the technicolor tresses we've grown so accustomed to lately), but for a computer generated likeness to be so instantly recognizable is a hu! ge feat. The watermelon romper from Katy's 2008 performance on the Today Show's Summer Concert Series is one of the closest ringers of the lot. A little haphazardous approach to the polka dots seeds and a touch more white showing at the neckline, and this would have been eerily perfect.

The Blonds's Carmen Miranda dress that Katy wore performing during the 2009 Grammy Awards got the virtual treatment, too. The placement of the memorable piece's bejeweled fruit is only a hair off with the absence of that one bunch of grapes from her right halter strap, but overall, this is a fantastic replica. We just wish the watermelon-ness of the Sims bodice were a teensy bit more exaggerated. And also that it existed in our closets.

This is the only kind of disappointing performance outfit homage. This silvery A-line frock that Katy wore during her 2011 Grammy Nominations Concert performance gets simplified into a looser, more tiered situation. The general outline of the dress is the same, but the Sims togs are lacking that underwired bustier, the buxom sweetheart neckline, the snowflake pattern, and that glittery fascinator. We do give them props for the matching arm ice, but this outfit (especially when compared to the other more elaborate ensembles) feels a little sleepy. But we bow LOW for the valiant effort and what the Sims team got right (which is a lot!) because if WE had to code the Sims 3: Showtime Katy Perry Edition game, it would look a little something! like this.
