Katy Perry denies reports that she will star in Freddie Mercury movie
Kety Perry has denied reports that she will be starring in an upcoming biopic about the late Queen frontman Freddie Mercury. Rumors stated that she would play the bisexual singers girlfriend Mary Austin.
U.K. tabloid The Mirror first reported earlier this month that Perry was interested in starring in the film, hoping that it would be the California Gurls singers big break into acting. The role would be just her second acting experience, coming after voicing a character in The Smurfs.
However, during Tuesday nights premiere of her 3D concert film, Katy Perry: Part of Me, Perry denied that there was any truth to the report. There's something about the internet that's sort of funnyit's that nothing is true on there, she said.
There's been no formal offer, she told E!. Although I do like the association and I like the company because I think Sacha Baron Cohen is hilarious.
Perry, who dressed as Mercury for her 24th birthday party, added, I have to take a catnap first before I do anything.
Prior to the premiere, a rep for Perry told The Hollywood Reporter, There's no truth to [the report].
Back in September, the Freddie Mercury project was announced by GK Films, which cast The Dictator star Sacha Baron Cohen as Mercury. The producers also secured the rights to several of Queens classic songs, including Youre My Best Friend, We Will Rock You, Bohemian Rhapsody and Another One Bites The Dust.
"Queen is one of the greatest rock bands of all time, and a music brand all unto itself," GK Film's Graham King said in a statement at the time. Freddie Mercury was an awe-inspiring performer, so with Sacha in the starring rol! e couple with Peter's screenplay and the support of Queen, we have the perfect combination to tell the real story behind their success.
Part of Me hits theaters on July 5.
