In an interview with Teen Vogue, Perry confessed that she was fascinated by Madonna's 1991 Truth or Dare documentary and hoped to capture a similar sentiment in her own film.

"Madonna is everything to me, and that movie is amazing, because it caught her at a time when she was a bit more vulnerable," she explained.

"I wanted to do that too, to capture a snapshot of who I am now so that I can remind myself what I've lost if I ever do become totally jaded."

In the trailer for the 3D release, Perry discusses her struggle to find success, saying: "I was going through some depressing, dark times. But it's a journey and I learned so much from that journey. I feel a stronger, better person because of it."
