MTV names Katy Perry its 1st artist of the year

NEW YORK (AP) Katy Perry is MTV's first artist of the year.

The pop siren eclipsed Adele for the honor as MTV tries to call attention to its musical roots.

MTV said Thursday that Perry's achievement of tying Michael Jackson with five No. 1 singles from the same album made her omnipresent in pop culture. Perry's trying for a sixth with "The One That Got Away."

Adele's "Rolling in the Deep" was a pretty easy choice for song of the year.
