Katy Perry within reach of MJs record
Katy Perry is pulling out all the stops to make her Teenage Dream a record-setting reality.
Perry and Michael Jackson are the only artists ever to land five No. 1 singles from the same album. However, Perry has a shot to land a sixth chart-topper with her latest single, The One That Got Away, which has climbed to No. 9 on Billboards charts.
In an effort to boost the songs chances of reaching No. 1, Perrys record company put The One That Got Away on sale for 69 cents, instead of the usual $1.29, trying to capitalize on Perrys hosting duties on Saturday Night Live last week. Some will call foul if she lands the top spot after the price cut, much like some criticized her move of releasing a remix of Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.), which featured Missy Elliott, just as it looked like the track might come up short.
Of course, her first three Teenage Dream singles California Gurls, Teenage Dream and Firework needed no help to get to No. 1, though some argue E.T. may not have made it without the remix version including Kanye West. Her domination of the singles charts since last summer, with 19 weeks at No. 1, outpaced even Jackson, whose Bad pushed five songs I Just Cant Stop Loving You, Bad, The Way You Make Me Feel, Man in the Mirror and Dirty Diana to No. 1 for seven weeks between 1987 and 1989.
Will Perrys dream come true? It will likely come down to how many Twilight fans support Bruno Mars It Will Rain and how long it will take Rihanna to replace her We Found Love on the top of the charts.
