Katy Perry Shows Spoofing Skills On SNL

December 12, 2011

Singer Katy Perry took the reigns of Saturday Night Live over the weekend, following in the footsteps of Elton John, Jon Bon Jovi, Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears and other musicians who have hosted the show. After performing as the musical guest on SNL once before, Perry turned over those duties to her former tour opener, Robyn, and this time she focused her acting chops on spoofing other singers, including Christina Aguilera and Florence Welch.

Perry started the show with the opening monologue, for which she donned a tight red dress covered in Christmas ornaments. In addition to appearing in a disturbingDigital Short sing-along feature about best friends with Andy Samberg (and cameos from Matt Damon and Val Kilmer),and a skit about Hello Kitty fandom, Perry appeared in a parody trailer for The Apocalypse, a movie spoof on the romantic comedy New Year's Eve, inwhich she dressed up as Aguilera and mocked her signature singing-style and wore a dress similar to one Aguilera was recently criticized for. Then, Perry portrayed Welch of Florence + the Machine in a skit about a fake canine-themed movie soundtrack called Doggie Duty. She even channeled a foul-mouthed Pippa Middleton in a skit that depicted a raunchy version of Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip.

While rehearsing for the show on Thursday, Perry told MTV News that hosting SNL was the icing on her cake for 2011. "It's a cherry on top," she said. "Most definitely, you hear with different monologues of different hosts every week, it sounds a bit repetitive and stereotypical about how this is their dream come true to host SNL, but it really is each and every one of our dream come true to host SNL, to just have fun, goof off, try and make some people laugh. And we'll see. Hopefully I don't embarrass myself, 'cause if I do, I'll stick to music."
