Katy Perry congratulates Russell Brand on his ten years of sobriety

Despite having a less than friendly relationship since divorcing a year ago, Katy Perry has reached out to Russell Brand to congratulate him for reaching ten years of sobriety.

Russell - a former heroin addict - celebrated the anniversary earlier this week and tweeted:

Ten years clean... Thanks for all your messages of love... Anyone can get clean, one day at a time.

Katy decided to send an email to the comedian, whos on tour in New Zealand at the moment.

A source said: Although theyve broken up, Katy knows how important this milestone is for Russell.

She wanted to let him know that she was thinking of him and that she was still proud of what he has achieved.She also wanted to drop him the email to wish him a happy 2013 and to let him know that her heart was finally healing.

Katy and Russell first met in the summer of 2009 when she filmed a cameo appearance for Russells film Get Him To The Greek.

The couple married on 23 October, 2010, in a traditional Hindu ceremony near the Ranthambhore tiger sanctuary in Rajasthan, India, which is the same place where Russell proposed.

After 14 months of marriage, Russell filed for divorce from Katy on 30 December, 2011, citing irreconcilable differences
