Katy Perry: Breakup Song 'Part Of Me' Is Not About Russell Brand

The devastating lyrics are about love gone wrong. But Katy Perry insists her latest hit, "Part of Me," isn't about her ex, Russell Brand.

"I wrote it two years ago, which is funny because everybody is like 'God, it sounds so current,' " the pop star, 27, who unveiled the song at this year's Grammy Awards, tells MTV News.

The song is full of jabs and barbs the lines "You can keep the diamond ring/It don't mean nothing anyway" seemed particularly apt but Perry isn't going to lie about the timing of it.

"Some people that I work with were like, 'You should just say you wrote it a couple of weeks ago,' " she says. "I'm like, 'I'm not a d---, I'm going to tell the truth.' I wrote it two years ago when I was writing and recording Teenage Dream, [but] it didn't feel right on the record."

Teenage Dream was released in August 2010, two months before Perry and Brand got married in India. They split in December 2011.

Still, Perry admits it's a little odd that she wrote such a withering song, and then ended up releasing it now.

"Sometimes I'm like, 'Am I living in The Truman Show?' ... What's going on?' " she says. "It just feels like sometimes I'm caught in this movie where my life is paralleling my music! It seems very serendipitous, but, as un-fun as it sounds, I prepare everything. I'm overly prepared and kind of a control! freak i n the best of ways."
